Tremosine

To enjoy the paradise of Tremosine you must first pass the ravine of the river Brasa, where the rock has been hollowed out by the creek for centuries. Arriving at the Lis, the view opens. Tremosine consists of eighteen hamlets: Campione is just right on the lake, while the others – Ariàs, Bassanega, Cadignano, Castone Mezzema, Musio, Pregasio, Priezzo, Secastello, Sermerio, Sompriezzo, Ustecchio, Vesio, Villa, Voiandes, Voltino and Pieve, which is the main one – are scattered throughout the beautiful plateau. The City (about 72 square kilometres of territory) is one of the largest in the province of Brescia. Inserted in the Alto Garda Park, with a varied natural environment: the small hamlets are set among valleys, on hillocks and plateaus covered with olive trees, meadows, pine trees. You can get to Tremosine also coming from Limone and Tignale along the “Tignalga”. Numerous mule tracks, winding gently along the sides of mountains, get you to places that until 1918 marked the border between Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Wonderful are the muleteer that from St. Michael and Bondo lead to Tremalzo towards the Ledro Valley. Hikers and lovers of mountain-bike, even the most exacting, will be satisfied by these amazing itineraries. People living on the plateau had based their lives on agriculture and farming for a long time, since the seventies of last century when tourism led a new prosperity, especially in the villages of Bassanega and Voltino. The accommodation capacity is now based on some twenty hotels and residences, for an amount of about a thousand beds; Germans, Swiss, Belgians and Austrians are the most faithful guests. The growth in the number of tennis courts, more than sixty, is due to the needs for a more general “sport tourism”. You can practice different sports, such as hiking, trekking, mountain biking, and in Campione is also possible to practice windsurfing, kite-surfing and sailing.
HISTORY
The first human settlement dates back to Neolithic times. Rich vegetation and abundant water encouraged migration from south of Lake Garda. There is no information about the period from 3000 BC to the Roman era. During the Ancient Roman period, rich Romans owned villas in Tremosine. The “Veneto” period was fairly prosperous for the regions of Lake Garda. The main activities in Tremosine were agriculture (olive trees, grapevines and fruit) and farming (goats, cows and donkeys). There were also a little iron industry and a manganese cave in Sermerio. In San Michele and Val di Brasa there were metallurgic centres where it was possible to utilize hydraulic energy.
LOCAL PRODUCTS
In Tremosine, in the heart of the Park of Alto Garda Bresciano, operate some companies engaged in the rearing of brown-alpine cow breed. The milk produced in stables and malgas is given to the Alpe del Garda Co-operative and used for producing butter and cheese. The best known are the “Formagella of Tremosine” and “Garda”, both very appreciated by gourmets. Fresh cheese, natural yoghurt, ice cream and ricotta cheese are also produced. Honey and olive-oil are also of a very good quality; the oil has low acidity, delicate flavour and high digestibility and is obtained by cold pressing olives with the traditional mechanical pressing. In the woods of chestnut, beech and coniferous, mushrooms grow during the fall; a product of ancient tradition, recently rediscovered in the mountain zone, are the precious and rare truffles, both the white kind that is the most valuable that ripens between October and December, and the black one, which ripens between November and March.
